(10-13) 15:31 PDT EL CERRITO -- A man stabbed and bludgeoned his sister and her husband to death in El Cerrito in 2006 because he thought the couple were too liberal, were raising their children wrong and because they hadn't invited him over for Christmas, a prosecutor told jurors Tuesday.

Edward Wycoff, 40, of the Sacramento suburb of Citrus Heights coldly planned the slayings, including getting Lasik surgery and using night-vision goggles so he could find his way around the house where Julie Wycoff Rogers, 47, lived with her husband, Paul Rogers, 48, prosecutor Mark Peterson said.

He also purposefully picked the date for the killings - Jan. 31, 2006 - Peterson said in Contra Costa County Superior Court in Martinez. That was 20 years to the day after Wycoff's grandmother, whom he hated, left his home after breaking her hip, the prosecutor said.

Wycoff regarded his grandmother as "evil" and thought his life improved considerably after she left, Peterson said. Because he believed the couple had also been making his life miserable, he chose that date to break into their home on Rifle Range Road overlooking Wildcat Canyon Regional Park, stab them repeatedly with a knife and bludgeon them with a wheelbarrow handle, Peterson said in his opening statement in Wycoff's murder trial.

Although Wycoff was also armed with a gun, he didn't use it because he didn't want to boost the cause of gun-control supporters, the prosecutor said. Wycoff, who is serving as his own attorney, told jurors that he still hates the couple "a little." "They owe me a life," he said. "This has ruined my life, and Julie and Paul owe me for that."

Wycoff agreed with the prosecutor that he resented members of Paul Rogers' family for their liberal politics, and that he thought the couple were at times "too easy" when they disciplined their children. He also said that "it wasn't just Christmas" when he wasn't invited over. It was also Thanksgiving in 2005, the year his and Julie Rogers' father died. "When someone does that, they hate you - they're out to destroy you," Wycoff said.

Peterson said Wycoff had planned to adopt the couple's three children after he committed the killings. The prosecutor played for the jury the 911 call made by Eric Rogers, then 17, after the killer broke into the home about 4:30 a.m. The boy's sister, Laurel, then 12, could be heard screaming in the background. The children tried to help their father, who told them, "I love you all" before dying, the prosecutor said. Eric Rogers brushed his father's hair, telling him, "I love you, papa." Peterson said Julie Rogers' last words to police were, "Kids OK?" The children were not harmed. A third child, then 15, was not living at the home at the time.

In an interview from jail after the slayings, Wycoff, who is 6 foot 5 and weighs 300 pounds, said he had tried to disguise himself during the killings by wearing a motorcycle helmet and attaching a ponytail with his late mother's hair. In a poem, Wycoff wrote, "My sister, I gutted her like a fish," Peterson said. "And in fact, he did," the prosecutor added, "and he's proud of it."

Wycoff was arrested after he turned up at a hospital in Placer County, seeking treatment for a gash on his leg that he probably sustained while breaking into the home, Peterson said. Wycoff is charged with two counts of murder along with the special circumstance alleging that he committed more than one murder. Prosecutors said they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted.

Wycoff's opening statement indicated he would try to justify the killings to the jury, rather than deny he committed them. At the close of his remarks, Wycoff told the "few fans" in the gallery to contact his advisory attorney, David Briggs, if they wanted autographs.

...Very good. I don't believe in lengthy reviews, mainly because they often give away too many plot points, so I'll just say a few things. The special effects were good, but they didn't overshadow the story. Plenty of action. It is somewhat gory, so don't see it with someone if they're squeamish about bloody scenes. And the story? Well, considering how savage we are with each other, I can completely see human beings behaving in the way they're portrayed in the film.

It's a dark film, if you couldn't pick that up from the trailers, so don't expect a typical Hollywood ending like in 'E.T.' or 'Cocoon'. If it had one like either of those films I wouldn't be giving it a positive review. Now don't get me wrong. I enjoyed both 'E.T.' and 'Cocoon', but those were "cute" scifi movies, and for the "cute" scifi genre they satisfied. But 'District 9' ain't no 'E.T.', even though it did have a couple of touching moments.

So I recommend it. So does RottenTomatoes, and as of this moment the film stands at 88% on the Tomatometer. Pretty impressive. Definitely worth the price of admission.

Now let's get back to treating each other like shit, so that when aliens come we can focus all that hostility on them. Do it for the species.

So I was watching this show on National Geographic. It was called the Devil's Bible. I'm not going to explain what it was about because it was a crappy piece that seems to be status quo for NatGeo these days. One thing I absolutely loved about it though, is the montage of dark artwork depicting demon possessions in a literal manner. I like the more macabre, "evil" and romantic part of Christian folklore. Does anybody know where I can find more art like this? It was mostly drawings, some were paintings. If I had to guess, I would say it's 17th century Mannerism. Some was more Medieval, but the good shit seemed to be a bit more contemporary than medieval, like I said Mannerism or maybe Renaissance.

Thank you in advance

In true blankfist fashion, this roast blows its wad early...

I suppose some of you know this "person", who's been luring our kids off the internet and made things way too real for them. He's a web-developer, but he won't dare show his work a.k.a it sucks. He's got a lovely cat named Maceo, whose kidney's have failed because it licked peanut butter off somewhere.

Blankfist has been around for a long while, but no one has really cared. A strong supporter of the Obama administration, he's welcomed the conversion to statism lately. Good for him that the government is paying all his bills now, since his work is sheit.

He seems to be overly focused on sex, clearly compensating for something, but I wouldn't know. Must be because he's getting old and wrinkled.

If you want to know something more about her, check out the questionnaire on http://parody.videosift.com/talk/Blankfist-is-on-the-spit-ready-for-roasting-on-monday or below.

What do you do when you are not at the computer?
File restraining orders against gwiz665 for being a creepy stalker.

What is your favorite of your posted videos?
It's a toss up between http://www.videosift.com/video/The-Flatulating-Bunny and http://www.videosift.com/video/Noooo

What is your favorite video on videosift?
Who knows? I really like this one: http://www.videosift.com/video/Doug-Stanhope-on-Nationalism

How many avatars have you had since being a member? What were (are) they?
Geez. I've gone through so many. Mainly Kubrick variants. I'm digging the new Statue of Liberty with the taser.

What non-self-involved site do you visit most often?
Crane's Inanities. http://cranesinanities.blogspot.com/

Is that underwear boxer, brief, or birthday?
Boxers. Some of them worn down to nothing more than threads and elastic. My girlfriend actually has to goad me into throwing them away when my balls start peeking out like 'Kilroy Was Here'.

What is your ratio of pairs of shoes to underwear?
Probably close to 4:1 or 5:1. That's with a higher percentage of boxers to shoes, obviously.

Would you most prefer to be involved in a monumental one-of-a-kind hiking expedition, working on a breakthrough cure for a debilitating illness , or presenting the discovery of a revolutionary new way to parse data?
Debilitating illness.

What is your favorite ice cream topping? Favorite (non-ice-cream-related) spice?
I don't care for sweets too often, but when I do get that urge I like toffee bars. There's an awesome Mario Batali place here in LA called Pizzeria Mozza that has a kick ass meyer lemon gelato pie with candied lemon zest and Champagne vinegar sauce. As far as my favorite "spice" it has to be anything spicy. I like peppers on everything.

Are you a tits, ass, or legs man?
Every bit of that. I love all women types and all woman parts.

What kind of pet(s) do you have? Include name(s).
Maceo is my full bred Oriental Shorthair with chronic renal failure. Here's his album on photobucket: http://s259.photobucket.com/albums/hh316/blankfist/Maceo/

Do you have any image(s) of yourself online that you're willing to share?
There are some in the Maceo photo album above.

What is your most frequented source of news?
I don't have one source of news. But, I do listen to freetalklive.com's podcasts while I work.

What is your beverage (poison) of choice?
Depends. When I'm dieting I drink wine. I love a good bottle of wine. A good California Zin or Syrah from Santa Ynez is incredible. When I'm not dieting, I also enjoy a good beer. A Blue Moon sans orange. A red ale can be perfection.

Have you ever been arrested?
Yep. Two DUIs. I've also been arrested for disorderly conduct (you know, that catch-all charge) for fucking a chick in a jacuzzi at Myrtle Beach. She also had a twin sister. Banged her, too. I'm a class act.

What’s your go-to move for making a good first impression?
Eye contact followed up by crazy eyes.

How would you describe your coif: bangs, balding or rug?
Not balding. I have a full, thick hair.

Is your face clean-shaven or do you have a beard, a goatee or a mustache?
I do want a burly, porn star mustache, but I'm clean shaven. I typically shave once a week, so a scruffy face is typical.

List your five most cherished possessions.
The Story of the Three Bibles: a history of my great great grandfather working in the oppressive southern mill towns. Amazing Fantasy #15 signed by Stan Lee. A 6 foot x 5 foot lithographic poster for Spider-Man 2 I framed and have hanging in my bedroom (nerd alert). My first film. A 1980s hot pink Powell Peralta Sword and Skull skateboard.

What religion, if any, did you practice as a child?
Protestant. Southern Baptist and Presbyterian.

What about now?
Atheist.

What is your favorite memory?
My second year of film school. Having my short film win the audience vote. That was a good day for me. Oh, and having sex with that high school cheerleader and watching her walk across the room while back lit by the TV was a nice memory too.

What was your favorite childhood television show?
Scooby Doo, probably.

How would you describe your personal style/sense of fashion/taste for life/artistic flair?
I'm rather unpretentious. I like simply button ups and t-shirts and jeans.

Who is your favorite Sift Hero?
Is there such a thing? Well, in that case, I really appreciate KP and DFT and Issy. http://www.videosift.com/member/nerbula

What goal do you have while a Videosift member?
To never downvote a video since the Siftopocalypse.

Do you upvote comments more for their originality, sense of humor, or self-deprecation?
All three. If you make me chuckle, you'll most likely get an upvote. Or if I find your political perspective agreeable.

Are you a lover or a fighter?
When I'm drunk, I'm a fighter. When I'm sober, I'm a lover.

Who do you respect the most on videosift?
I respect jonny a lot. Where is that dirty bastard?

Do you consider yourself emotional?
Sometimes. I fight it. I can be a very passionate person, but I spend a great deal of energy trying to overcome my passion and be more insightful and use reason to make decisions whenever possible. I live in fear like anyone else, but I don't let it cripple me.

Do you feel you are the same in real life and on videosift?
Haha. Pretty much. I'm a real harasshole.

Approximate the percentage of time you work and you play on a computer.
I work on the computer, so I play and work 24/7.

If you had a time machine would you travel to an era in the past or future? Explain.
Tertiary Period. Who doesn't want to watch the rise of the mammals? And those prehistoric birds, like the diatryma, are amazing! But, if I could go back in time and be young again? Well, that would be splendid. I had an awesome childhood.

If you could choose your own way of death, what would it be?
Death by holding my pee.

What is your favorite kind of food?
Cheese.

What is your favorite childhood memory?
Drawing comics on folded notebook paper with my best friend. Also drawing mazes and creating games on paper.

What is your most sacred personal rant?
The one I do every day.

What is your favorite color?
Blue.

What three sites do you visit most often?
Videosift. email. facebook. Is there really anything else to do online? Seriously?

If you had one super human power, what would it be? Which ability would you be least likely to choose?
I dig Wolverine's claws, but then flying would be a bitch because you couldn't go through the metal detectors. I'm also a big fan of Spider-Man, so web swinging would be cool, too. Yeah, I'd probably pick that one. I'd be least likely to choose the power of AIDS.

What are your experiences with Mac OS, Windows, and Linux? Which do you use now?
I use both Mac and PC. Depends on what I'm doing.

Name five hot celebrities you wish to see nude.
Jessica Alba. Mila Kunis. Evangeline Lilly. Keira Knightley. Anne Hathaway. Megan Fox. Wait, how many was that?

How do you feel when it comes to extreme preachers of religion? What would you say to one if they came up to you in the street?
I don't care for them, but I probably would just ignore them.

If you were going to be arrested and imprisoned for 20 years no matter what you did, what would you do to go out with a bang ( or without one )?
I'd probably figure out a way to leave the country. And, no matter what Hollywood tells you, the Mexican border is probably the worst place to go.

If every illegal activity were to be made legal for one day, what would you do on that day? Pillage, thieve, sit on your couch and watch banned TV shows, what?
I'd probably drink a beer while driving or something tame like that. I think most people would remain rather tame and well behaved.

How do you feel about the different kinds of body art (piercings, tattoos, scars, etc)?
I think they're fine.

How were you introduced to video games? What was the first game you played?
My dad had a crappy home console system from the 70s that basically had pong. It was awesome, but also crappy. I used to go to arcades a lot growing up. I loved Mat Mania and Legend of Kage - both from the 80s.

What are ten of your interests/hobbies?
Drinking. Fucking. Writing. Filmmaking. Watching movies. Jousting. Rape. Is that ten?

What is your favorite memory as a teenager?
Sex. Such wonderful, wonderful moments.

List up to five movies you really like.
In the Name of the Father. Star Wars. 2001. Full Metal Jacket. Robocop.

List five movies you really hate.
Practical Magic. There can be only one worthy of my hate.

Why have you stuck with the sift for so long? Is there anything that has made you consider leaving the site?
I don't know why I'm still here. I am completely fringe when it comes to my politics, so I cannot answer that. I have wanted to leave. Mostly because I tire of debating NetRunner.

Why do you upvote/downvote comments?
I upvote because I agree with them or find them funny. I downvote to piss burdturgler off.

What made you pick blankfist as a username?
It means empty fight. It's a name of peace. Nah, just playing, I just slapped those two words together back in 98 and the rest was history.

What are you afraid of?
People who are afraid of people.

Who are the Legion of Douche?
Lex Luthor2000
Gorilla Groddirt
MINKestro
Mauzzaro
And once, Solomon Jonny tried to join.

Cats, or dogs?
Both.

When it comes to music, what are your tastes?
Rock wins most of the time. I love being nostalgic, though, so I'll listen to the cheesiest hair metal such as Slaughter and fucking love it.

Are you a habitual cross-dresser? Ever flirted with it and worn ladies clothes of any kind?
Just panties. Hey, I'm trying to emulate Ed Wood.

What would your last meal, if you could plan ahead, look like?
Pussy.

If you could buy a single item, of any choice, which would it be?
Mena Suvari's breasts.

If you could have someone assassinated today, who would it be and why (if anyone)?
No one. I try to not endorse violence.

Who is your enemy?
Statists who think the majority should tell the minority what to do.

Who is your best friend/sifter?
My girlfriend is my best friend. As far as sifters, that would probably be KP or DFT.... or choggie.

You used to be a military man, did you not? What did you do? Why not anymore?
I did. Was in the US Navy long enough to get them awesome government benefits and then I bailed. I was a Radioman: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radioman. Essentially that's communications, and believe it or not I used to have a Top Secret security clearance. Why not anymore? Have you noticed my personality is not one of following orders? I was a not a good fit.

Any injuries a.k.a "weak spots"?
I broke my right hand just at my pinkie knuckle. I had my big toenail removed in the military and that damn thing never grew back right. My balls are weak.

State secrets to divulge?
State secrets? No, I try to not get involved with the business of the state.

You're a web developer nowadays, care to show your work?
I am hesitant, because if a client found these links on google and followed it back to this vile roast, that would most likely not be a good thing.

If you were running for president, what would be your talking points? Which issues are important to you?
Obviously I'd run on a pro-liberty, classic liberal platform. I'd ask people to vote for me if they believe in trusting their neighbor's right to choose his own destiny without coercion. I'd also promise to make Noam Chomsky likeness the new welcome mat at the White House.

Which of your PQ'ed videos has been most unfairly neglected?
All of them! Go upvote them all! I have 163 videos in there! Help a brother out. I thought this one was funny and was surprised it only got 2 votes: http://www.videosift.com/video/Hollywood-Pitch-of-Time-Dragons

Which sift-geists (fads on the sift) have you loved/hated?
I loved it when Siftbot was punk and had that mohawk thing with the early Bowie paint on his face. I didn't like it when he went grunge, though, because metal cylinders don't look good in flannel - it just made him look like an asshole.

When and why did you join videosift? Instant poster or did you lurk first?
Member since 2007-07-04. I lurked for a year maybe before that?

Do note that if you participate in this roast, your name will be thrown into the hat and might be picked for the next roast.. ye be warned

Horribly sad sad footage and situation. So sad that I watched it once and I do not want to ever see it again. Since then, I've seen about 100 videos on the sift of what appears to be the same thing. Since I don't want to watch it again, I can't really determine if these vids are technically dupes. In my opinion, there's no reason for having 4 videos of different close up angles, that would be exploitation. Furthermore, since the first one I saw posted, was taken down by the submitter because some of us agreed it was snuff, I don't see why others should be sifted. It's not fair to the orignal sifter...

If somebody could do a bit of dirty work for me, I've got some promotes in there for you. I know it's not much, but I think it'd benefit the sift in the long run...

I know I shouldn't do this at all...and I definitely know I shouldn't be talking about it but here I go anyway, maybe there's some others that are with me on this.

So sometimes when I come across a video that I love, but no longer has my vote because of the siftpocalypse, I vote it up again even when I know I voted for it once already. It's like for all those times I wish I could upvote a video twice, I now can. Who else is being naughty?

I forget if I voted for a video...especially good ones

Two Paths, Same Fate for Reporters Facing Prison
By JESSE McKINLEY

SAN FRANCISCO — The roads that led two Current TV employees, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, to be sentenced this week to a North Korean labor camp were in some regards as different as their lives here in California.

Ms. Ling, who grew up in a Sacramento suburb and has a well-known journalist sister, was earning a reputation at the San Francisco-based news channel as a fearless globe-trotting journalist. She reported stories in hotspots like Sri Lanka and Myanmar and witnessed the type of bloodshed such gritty work often entails.

Ms. Lee, on the other hand, moved as an adult to the United States from South Korea and usually worked in Los Angeles behind the scenes as an editor. She was taking her first trip on an overseas assignment for the company when she was arrested, according to a Current TV employee who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the company’s policy of not commenting on the situation.

The two women now face the same fate, having been sentenced Monday to 12 years of hard labor after a North Korean court found them guilty of illegally entering the country. The harsh sentences have prompted the Obama administration to call for the women’s release on humanitarian grounds, but administration officials say the women may be used as a negotiating ploy by North Korea in the continuing international fallout from the country’s nuclear test two weeks ago.

The women’s families have been mostly quiet since the sentencing, reportedly concerned that their comments could harden North Korean resolve or complicate the diplomatic efforts to win their release.

“I have trouble talking or thinking about this right now,” Michael Saldate, Ms. Lee’s husband, said in a brief telephone interview on Tuesday.

Current TV, a politics and youth-oriented news channel founded by former Vice President Al Gore, has had no comment on the two journalists. Kalee Kreider, a spokeswoman for Mr. Gore, also declined to comment on the specifics of the situation, but said Mr. Gore had been in regular contact with the families of Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee.

The two women were working on a story on the China-North Korea border when they were detained in mid-March. Long before that, Ms. Ling, 32, had shown a proclivity for life in front of the camera — her older sister, Lisa Ling, is a successful television reporter — and had been an on-air correspondent for Current since 2005.

Ms. Lee, 36, moved to the United States from South Korea in the mid-1990s and had settled into a quiet, steady life of work and family; she and Mr. Saldate have a 4-year-old daughter. Mr. Saldate, a stand-up comic and actor, was the public performer in the couple; Ms. Lee’s sole appearance on the Current TV Web site is a five-second clip of her holding up a can of soda. “Euna loves Dr Pepper,” the clip is titled.

Ms. Ling grew up with her sister in Carmichael, Calif., where she excelled at school and, according to a friend, Marcus Marquez, charted an ambitious life. She graduated with a communications degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1998.

“She was definitely always smiling, very smart, involved,” Mr. Marquez said. “She really looked up to her sister.”

Her onetime neighbors said Tuesday that they were incredulous that Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee could be involved in an international incident.

“They’re not spies, I know that for sure,” said Pat Hozack, 74, who lives next door to the modest two-story house where Ms. Ling grew up and her father still lives. “It all feels unreal.”

Ms. Ling had traveled extensively as a Current TV correspondent and is now vice president of the channel’s “vanguard journalism unit,” which she described as dedicated to investigating the “big issues really affecting our world” in a short promotional video.

“We’re trying to push the envelope here, and stay out in front of events,” she says, “rather than regurgitate news headlines.”

Sure enough, Ms. Ling had shown a taste for potentially dangerous assignments on topics like marijuana trafficking, child prostitution and slave labor.

A recent story about the drug war in Mexico had been especially challenging, including one video that showed Ms. Ling visibly shaken by a shooting.

“Oh, my God, oh, my God,” Ms. Ling says, looking at a body in a bullet-ridden car. “Did you see that?” Ms. Ling continued reporting, eventually delivering an hourlong segment.

In a June 1 interview on CNN’s “Larry King Live,” Ms. Ling’s husband, Iain Clayton, read a letter from his wife.

“I am so lonely, and scared,” Mr. Clayton read. “But baby, thinking of you gives me strength.”

On Tuesday, Mr. Saldate was still trying to make sense of his wife’s situation, even as he tended to their daughter, taking her to a doctor’s visit and school.

“Maybe in the future I’ll be able, but right now, I can’t really explain,” Mr. Saldate said of his feelings on the matter. “It’s just not something I can go into.”

Rebecca Cathcart contributed reporting from Los Angeles, Malia Wollan from Carmichael, Calif., and Brian Stelter from New York.

RECENT UPDATE 6/2/09:Kansas prosecutors have brought murder and assault charges against the man suspected of killing Wichita physician George Tiller, whose women's clinic was a frequent target of protests against abortion.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/06/02/kansas.doctor.killed/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

Some interesting coverage in that story as well:
'Tiller practiced medicine for nearly 40 years. Most of his patients were grappling with pregnancies that were "fatally or catastrophically complicated by medical problems," Dr. Warren Hern, a Colorado physician and a friend, said on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360."

"The many women who come for late abortions, in fact, have desperate circumstances with a desired pregnancy," he said. "They want to have a baby, not an abortion."'

(CNN) -- Dr. George Tiller, whose Wichita, Kansas, women's clinic has been the target of anti-abortion protests for years, was shot and killed at his church Sunday morning, his attorneys said.
Dr. George Tiller was one of the few U.S. physicians that performed late-term abortions.

Dr. George Tiller was one of the few U.S. physicians that performed late-term abortions.

Laura Shaneyfelt, an attorney with the firm of Monnat and Spurrier, confirmed Tiller's death to CNN.

The 67-year-old doctor was one of the few U.S. physicians who still performed late-term abortions. He survived a 1993 shooting outside his clinic.

Wichita police said they were searching for a powder-blue Ford Taurus in connection with the killing, which took place outside Reformation Lutheran Church shortly after 10 a.m.

Witnesses provided a license number of the car the killer used to speed away from the church, police spokesman Gordon Bassham said.

Abortion is one of the hottest buttons in U.S. politics, with opponents arguing the practice is tantamount to the murder of an unborn child. Abortion rights supporters argue the decision to terminate a pregnancy is best left to the woman.

The anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, which has led numerous demonstrations at Tiller's clinic, condemned the shooting as a "cowardly act."

"Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice," the group said in a statement. It offered its prayers for Tiller's family, "that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ."

In March, Tiller was acquitted of 19 counts of performing procedures unlawfully at his clinic. In 2008, a probe initiated by abortion opponents who petitioned state authorities to convene a grand jury ended without charges.

On its Web site, Operation Rescue refers to Tiller as a "monster" who has "been able to get away with murder." And Operation Rescue founder Randall Terry, who is no longer affiliated with the group, called Tiller "a mass murderer."

"We grieve for him that he did not have time to properly prepare his soul to face God," Terry said in a written statement. "I am more concerned that the Obama administration will use Tiller's killing to intimidate pro-lifers into surrendering our most effective rhetoric and actions. Abortion is still murder, and we still must call abortion by its proper name."

The 1993 attack on Tiller left him wounded through both arms. An ardent foe of abortion, Shelley Shannon, was convicted of attempted murder and is serving a 20-year sentence in federal prison for the shooting.

If Tiller was slain because of his work, he would be the fourth U.S. physician killed by abortion opponents since 1993. In addition, a nurse at a Birmingham, Alabama, clinic was maimed and an off-duty police officer was killed in a 1998 bombing by Eric Rudolph, who included abortion among his list of anti-government grievances.

Rudolph admitted to that attack and three other bombings -- including the 1996 attack on the Olympic games in Atlanta, Georgia -- and is serving life in prison.

Stay with Eyewitness News for further updates.

Police say Tiller's body was removed from the church at 12:30 Sunday afternoon. The FBI is involved in the investigation.

Nationwide alert issued for car and suspect description.

WARREN, Pa. — A northwestern Pennsylvania newspaper is apologizing for running a classified advertisement calling for the assassination of President Barack Obama.

Warren Times Observer Publisher John Elchert says the ad appeared Thursday. It read, "May Obama follow in the steps of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy!" The four presidents were all assassinated.

Elchert tells The Associated Press that the newspaper's advertising staff didn't make the historical connection.

He says the newspaper turned information over to police and that the Secret Service is investigating the person who placed the ad.

A note in Friday's paper says the newspaper "apologizes for the oversight."

I'm a bit disturbed that we're seeing more videos of fatal accidents on the sift of late. And not just in the unsifted queue, but videos that get past the bar and into the "main" sift. Just today I stumbled over a traffic accident and skydiving accident, and this finally bugged me into action.

In my opinion these concrete examples are snuff; but apparently my fellow sifters think otherwise. So I have to ask: when is someone dying on video snuff? Do you have to see a body? Before or after the event? Does blood have to splatter? Bodyparts have to fly?

These questions are only semi-rhetorical. For me, seeing a car being flattened by a truck and knowing that there were people in there and you are witnessing their exitus (and hopefully not munching cheetos and posting 'cool' comments) is a rather disconcerting situation for me. I don't need to see it happening up close, merely knowing that someone in there has a split second to think "ohshitohshitohshit" is enough...

My perception may be a bit skewed since I got to give first aid in a car crash 15 years back, sensitizeing me a bit to that kind of situation.

And so I put the question to you: What is snuff and what is acceptable in the community on the sift?

NOUN:

b. The right and power to act, believe, or express oneself in a manner of one's own choosing
c. The condition of being physically and legally free from confinement, servitude, or forced labor.

Our resident magician and dark overlord, darkrowan, has reached Gold 100! He has claimed VideoSift as his land to rule!

Cue dark and ominous music.

Darkrowan is a valued member and asset of the Sift. He has given us such great gems as The Groaning Lord of the Rings Voiceover and this recent piece of internet hilarity, The Talking Goat. Currently, his unsifted queue is empty, but his PQ has a number of videos awaiting your generous upvote!

Oh exalted ruler of the netherworld, we congratulate you on your recent conquest of the Gold 100 Star!

We messed up.

Big time.

We lost some tables in our main database, and discovered that our nightly backup was not taking a complete dump of all the tables.

I won't bore you with the details, but the bottom line is we've lost:
  • All votes, ever. -- [update] These have been recreated!
  • All member usernames who registered later than around 12 months ago
  • All member rankings
  • Your member profile info (e.g., bio, favorite sift, etc.), if any
  • All activity that happened on the site March 11
If you feel bad about this, believe it that we feel 100 times worse. We're putting into place measures to ensure that this can never happen again.

For the short term, we're declaring martial sift law across the community and deputized the top 40 sifters of all time to help fix things. The list of deputies is as follows:

All user accounts still exist, but for most of them the username and other account details (email address, star points, etc.) are unknown. However, the account is still associated with your posts (videos, sift talk, comments, etc.). So we've set all unknown usernames to a simple number until we can identify them.

If you are a user whose account has become some unknown number, please re-register with your original username. Then find one of your posts or comments to determine your temporary username number and post it in a comment here to have a deputy or admin fix your account.

We beseech you to stay calm during this crisis and trust that we're doing everything we can to bring the Sift back into a semblance of order.

We're sorry. Darwin bless VideoSift.

[edit]
For the time being, queued videos will not be expired to your pqueue by siftbot since they are a couple days old now and have zero votes.

[edit]
A good way to start repopulating things you know you voted on would be to go through all the videos you've added to your own playlists. Also check out the new "oldest medals" listing on the Top Sifts tab for a listing of just videos that have earned "top 15" medals.

We are automatically casting votes for every user on every video they've submitted so you don't have to do all those yourself.

[edit]
NOTE: You will not have to start sifting from scratch. After your username is fixed, all your old videos and star points will be applied to you as before.

This is a memorial thread for UsesProzac, who we suspect was tortured to death in Siftanamo Bay.

She was handcuffed in the middle of the night, denied a lawyer, never given a trial, evidence was never reviewed by a jury, and nobody has heard from her since. She protested her innocence until her final moments.

Today, and every day for the rest of your life, wear a black ribbon next to your username to show you remember UsesProzac and you don't think she deserved to be taken from us by the Dark Ones.

I just want everyone including the admins to know that I don't like this new idea of hobbiting people.

I saw the Lord of the Rings movies, and while they were mildly entertaining for the first ten hours, I just wouldn't want to see my fellow sifters become hairy-toed midgets.

I'm sorry if this offends anybody who may be related to Elijah Wood, but it bothers me that this new power could be so easily abused.

After all, at any moment you could be posting a video when BAM!...Ian McKellan upside yo head!

I'm just looking out for my friends of the Shire, I mean community. I don't want anybody losing eight inches of height and growing a metatarsal moustache.

I wanted to let everybody know, in case Peter Jackson ever makes an account here. Because if that happens, we're all screwed!

Thanks,

One hundred years after Marinetti's Futurist Manifesto
Rekombinant.org presents:
MANIFESTO OF POST-FUTURISM (20th February 2009)

1. We want to sing of the danger of love, the daily creation of a sweet energy that is never dispersed.
2. The essential elements of our poetry will be irony, tenderness and rebellion.
3. Ideology and advertising have exalted the permanent mobilisation of the productive and nervous energies of humankind towards profit and war. We
want to exalt tenderness, sleep and ecstasy, the frugality of needs and the pleasure of the senses.
4. We declare that the splendor of the world has been enriched by a new beauty: the beauty of autonomy. Each to her own rhythm; nobody must be constrained to march on a uniform pace. Cars have lost their allure of rarity and above all they can no longer perform the task they were conceived for: speed has slowed down. Cars are immobile like stupid slumbering tortoises in the city traffic. Only slowness is fast.
5. We want to sing of the man and the woman who caress one another to know one another and the world better.
6. The poet must expend herself with warmth and prodigality to increase the power of collective intelligence and reduce the time of wage labour.
7. Beauty exists only in autonomy. No work that fails to express the intelligence of the possible can be a masterpiece. Poetry is a bridge cast over the abyss of nothingness to allow the sharing of different imaginations and to free singularities.
8. We are on the extreme promontory of the centuries... We must look behind to remember the abyss of violence and horror that military aggressiveness and nationalist ignorance is capable of conjuring up at any moment in time.
We have lived in the stagnant time of religion for too long. Omnipresent and eternal speed is already behind us, in the Internet, so we can forget its syncopated rhymes and find our singular rhythm.
9. We want to ridicule the idiots who spread the discourse of war: the fanatics of competition, the fanatics of the bearded gods who incite massacres, the fanatics terrorised by the disarming femininity blossoming in all of us.
10. We demand that art turns into a life-changing force. We seek to abolish the separation between poetry and mass communication, to reclaim the power of media from the merchants and return it to the poets and the sages.
11. We will sing of the great crowds who can finally free themselves from the slavery of wage labour and through solidarity revolt against exploitation. We will sing of the infinite web of knowledge and invention, the immaterial technology that frees us from physical hardship. We will sing of the rebellious cognitariat who is in touch with her own body. We will sing to the infinity of the present and abandon the illusion of a future.

I submit this case before the siftquisition, so that we may let the matter to rest once and for all.

Berticus was banned in yesterdays siftquisition of qualm: see http://www.videosift.com/talk/Downvote-Bias

In the thread captainplanet420 invoked the * gay channel, with no good reason, and he was summarily banned, as he had been warned about this. In response to captainplanet420's invocation, berticus went through many of captainplanet420's sifts and marked them gay as well. He was summarily suspended for two weeks.

This was done without the involvement of the community, and so I will tender this appeal for him. Do you think it was fair to let him be banned for his crime? Should we rescind the suspension? (A heat of passion kind of thing) or shall it stand?

You may present your case in this sift talk and we will take a vote.

You may vote
Yay Yea or Aye: the suspension should stand
Nay: the suspension should be revoked

Votes are tallied: Suspension stands. See you in two weeks, berticus.
