So this may seem a bit morbid, but I was thinking about this today and I was wondering what others thought:

Internet communities have now been around long enough that certain members, active members, may well die.

I was browsing the list of sifters and noticed many sifters are simply absent and I thought, "maybe they are dead," and there would be no way of knowing if this person had really died or not. It is strange that you can have so many lengthy exchanges with an individual and, in the end, not even know if they have shed the mortal coil.

A deceased friend of mine has a ghost myspace account, obviously no one can erase it so it remains as an eerie tombstone and the same would be for the Sift. Perhaps we keep voting for their videos, and leaving private comment no one will read.

I don't have a real "question" here, but I was more curious on your thoughts...

Tim Russert died at NBC Studios of an apparent heart attack. He was 58.

NBC Senior Vice President and Washington Bureau Chief Tim Russert is dead. The longtime moderator of "Meet The Press" was 58-years-old.

According to the MSNBC biography on Russert, he was the Managing Editor and Moderator of "Meet the Press" and political analyst for "NBC Nightly News" and the "TODAY" program. He anchors "The Tim Russert Show," a weekly interview program on MSNBC. Russert also serves as senior vice president and Washington bureau chief of NBC News.

2 Marines disciplined over puppy-tossing video

Well, now the marines are being punished for it.

"The U.S. Marine Corps has disciplined two Marines over a videotape that showed a Marine throwing a puppy over a cliff, the military said Wednesday.

Officials did not specify the role that each man played in the incident, which received international attention after a video of it appeared on YouTube.com March 3.

Lance Cpl. David Motari is being processed for removal for his role, the Marine Corps said, and Sgt. Crismarvin Banez Encarnacion also has been punished.

The video shows someone throwing a black-and-white puppy off a rocky cliff. The dog makes a yelping sound as it flies through the air.

"That's mean. That was mean," someone off-camera is heard saying.

YouTube removed the video about a day after it was posted, "due to terms of use violation," the site said.

The Marines were quick to condemn the video when it surfaced, calling it "shocking and deplorable."

Marine officials said the disciplinary action followed a thorough investigation, according to a statement that the Marine Corps Base Hawaii released Wednesday.
"The actions seen in the Internet video are contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine and will not be tolerated," the statement said."

Fellow Sifter and resident revolutionary dystopianfuturetoday just got his 500th star, brothers and sisters. As fate would also have it, he currently has the number 1 rated comment, but that should come as no surprise. Rarely a day passes without seeing a comment of his in the Top 5. High-ranked comments are par for the course for him. One can also usually find a video or two of his lingering in the Top 15. Needless to say, the guy has become a Sifting legend.

Now some will say that I'm heaping all this praise on DFT because we're gay for each other. I would ask that you all kindly refrain from such chatter, as Issykitty is already suspicious. For now, let's just say that we like turtles.

So give it up for my Sifting amigo dystopianfuturetoday for hitting this major milestone. I'm proud of what my friend has accomplished here. Now if you don't mind, we're going to spend a quiet afternoon together at the pet store.

PS: Dag, where's that privilege for Silver Diamonds? I'm still leaning toward the free pedicure.

Yeah, it’s a shameless ad for M&Ms Dark chocolate, but this is a pretty good time-waster to keep you entertained for a bit.

Move around with the mouse, “z” to zoom in and “x” to zoom out. Click on an area of the painting and enter the title; if you’re correct the answer will light up green, if not, red (spelling counts!). Some are pretty easy: click on the birds for, well, “The Birds” others require a bit more creativity. As of this writing I found 35, can you find them all? You can save your progress if you wish.
