Saw that Derren Brown's recreation of this classic experiment was up, but that this wasn't. I guess I'm starting my own series of psych experiment videos. In 1961, on the heels of certain Nazi war crimes trials, a psychologist named Stanley Milgram conducted this experiment across a range of 40 individuals to test their response to authoritative pressure. The results shocked everyone. Only 1.2% of individuals were predicted to administer the highest voltage (450 volts); 26 of the 40 participants (65%)--some with clearly conflicted consciences--delivered the lethal shock. Schmawwy's recent post inspired this. I'm surprised it wasn't on here before. These experiments from the 1950s are critical to any discussion of the ethics of experimental science. While the results are a macabre set of clearly suffering individuals, the science of neurology may have taken some leaps from this research. Some say it was revolutionary; others ignore the research altogether on the grounds of its lack of ethical consideration for the animals. You decide.

From the 1998 movie "Slam" which tells the true story of Saul Williams, perhaps the greatest modern poet. It won at Sundance and Cannes. If you haven't seen it, netflix it soon. This poem is what started his rise to fame; black or white, it is pure verbal inspiration .
